QUINN, LIVINGSTON to UCLA _10.3.02

Bishop Montgomery's Noelle Quinn, a top 5 national recruit and the No. 1 recruit on the West Coast and All-CIF player Amanda Livingston of Troy High School in Fullerton, have given an oral committment to UCLA's coaches. They join Floridian Consuelo Lezcano, who committed to the Bruins last week, as future Bruins.

PAC-10 announces women's TV schedule

The Bruins are slated for one televised game for 2002-2003 and could be up for the two wildcard selection games. The set game will be against arch-rival USC, Sunday, January 12, noon at Pauley Pavilion and the two wildcard selection games will be Saturday, February 22 against host Stanford and Saturday, March 1 against Oregon at home.

MORE than just a coach

Former Bruin Jamie Oenning-Friesen is enjoying her new role as head coach of the Santa Barbara City College women's basketball team and working with college students, but her marriage to her husband Mike Friesen has been the one thing that she is most proud of.

Pac-10 rosters feature 33 starters from the 2001-02 season, among 88 total letterwinners. In other words, 66 percent of last year s starters are back. WASHINGTON leads the league with 13 letterwinners, while CALIFORNIA and UCLA feature 12 and 11, respectively. All five of the Huskies starters return, while three teams ARIZONA, UCLA and USC welcome four starters back. Of the remaining six teams, four return at least three starters from the 2001-02 season.

Non-conference games against NCAA participants Georgia, Baylor and Pepperdine and tournament appearances in Hawaii and Las Vegas highlight the 2002-03 UCLA women's basketball schedule.

INSIDE UCLA Women's Hoops_Michelle Greco_ 10.17.02

Michelle is a senior guard and three-year letterwinner on the UCLA women's basketball team. The Pac-10's leading scorer in 2000-01, Greco had to sit out the remainder of the 2001-02 season for medical reasons after averaging a team-best 23.6 points per game in the season's first five games. As a junior in 2000-01, Greco led the Pac-10 in scoring (19.9 ppg) and free throw percentage (.865). She ranks 15th on UCLA's all-time career scoring charts with 1,158 career points entering this season and set the school single-game record last season with eight three-point shots made at Michigan State. Greco is also the UCLA record-holder for single-season three-point shots made (50) and attempted (171).

INSIDE UCLA Women's Hoops_Krystle Johnson_ 9.11.02

Krystle is a sophomore center on the UCLA women's basketball team. Last season, she played in 25 games, averaging 2.4 points and 1.6 rebounds per game. She scored a career-high 15 points vs. Washington on Feb. 3 and tied her career-high with four rebounds. Against Cal in the first round of the Pac-10 Tournament, she had seven points in the victory, including a crucial three-point play which sparked the Bruins to a 13-0 run. At Hoover HS in Hoover, Alabama, Johnson was a Street and Smith's honorable mention All-American and led her team to the State Championship as a senior.

10.22.02 -- CRYSTAL ERWIN UPDATE -- The South Bend Tribune is reporting that Notre Dame's Fighting Irish are expected to receive a committment from 6-2 power forward Crystal Erwin out of Santa Fe Springs St. Paul High School. Erwin, ranked as high as No. 3 in the high school class of 2003, was also strongly considering UCLA and Georgia.

Loyola Marymount University head women's basketball coach Julie Wilhoit announced today the addition of Janae Hubbard to her staff. A 2001 graduate of UCLA where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in African American Studies with a concentration in history. A four-time letterwinner with the Bruins, she led her team to three straight NCAA Tournament appearances (1998, 1999, 2000).

In receiving 56 percent of the votes in the Player-of-the-Year Poll, junior point guard Natalie Nakase has been voted UCLAHomecourt Player-of-the-Year for the 2001-2002 season. Nakase's leadership on the court for the Bruins earned her All Pac-10 team, honorable mention honors. For the year, Nakase averaged 7.9 points (3rd on the team), 5.1 assists (3rd in Pac-10), and 3.1 rebounds, 1.7 steals (10th in P10). She also shot 78 percent from the free throw line (9th in P10) and was 4th in the Pac-10 in Assist-to-turnover ratio with a 1.45 ratio (5.1 assists to 3.5 turnovers per game). Nakase garnished four BHC Player-of-the-Week honors, tied with sophomore Whitney Jones for the most this season. Other players who received votes were Jones, the Bruins' leading scorer at 9.5 points per game, who received 38 percent of the votes and senior Shalada Allen who received 5 percent of the votes.
