WHAT'S bruin BRUINS starting to shape up_9.28.01 Notes on what's going on in Westwood Although the official day of practice is a little less than a month away, the Bruins have been busy working on their game. This is a firsthand analysis of what has been taking place during these sessions and what we can expect from the newbies. Notes compiled by P.D.M. Sissy Pickett, 6-7, center, freshman Pickett is what you would call raw talent. She is a huge player towering over her teammates. She needs to improve fitness and develop a take-no-prisoners attitude when posting-up on smaller defenders. She can’t be ignored by the defense, however, as she creates loads of space down low. She gets a lot of offensive and defensive rebounds. With experience from playing against strong competition, Sissy is going to be good. Brianna Winn, 5-9, guard, freshman Winn is a very nice addition to the team. She is more of a shooting guard than a point guard. Runs well in the open court and is not afraid to attack the basket or take quick medium shots. She has good outside range also and overall is a good all-around player with lots of mobility.
Malika Leatham, 6-2, center, senior
Leatham is going to benefit the most from the new post additions. She is an enthusiastic, emotional, never give-up player that should have been at UCLA all four years. With Sissy or Krystle (Johnson, 6-4 freshman, center) in the line-up, Malika will get a lot of those low post looks Maylana Martin (the former Bruin All-American) used to. Jalina Bradley, 5-7, guard, junior
AJ looks to be the most improved player from last year. She was always fast to the basket, but she now comes with a whole bunch of new found explosiveness and confidence. She can play guard and distribute the ball, but best of all, she has developed a repertoire of quick moves to the basket. Looks very good.
Natalie Jarret, 6-0, forward, junior
Jarrett’s outside shot has improved tremendously. She looks more confident. She can contribute to the team with her three-point range. Michelle Greco, 5-9, guard, senior
What more can you say? A ton of pressure will be lifted off her and a new more balanced player will emerge with greater space to work with. Could she be the Jackie Stiles of this year?
Natalie Nakase, 5-2, guard, junior
Nakase has gained tremendous confidence. She’s driving to the basket more and willing to take shots. She has worked very hard over the summer and is the leader of the team.
