WORLD TRADE CENTER tragedy making recruits think twice about where they will play next season_9.19.01

Last week's terrorist attacks have left every U.S. citizen feeling an unfamiliar amount of insecurity about his or her safety in this country and that fear has trickled down onto the college recruiting scene. Erin Grant, a highly regarded guard out of Texas, recently gave a verbal committment to Texas Tech over Stanford. A major factor in her decision was the need to stay home and be close to her family after last week's tragedy. Now, could it be that Nikki Blue, one of the top point guards in the class of 2002 could make the same decision and pick UCLA, just an hour-and-a-half away from her Bakersfield home, over UConn, a five-hour flight away?

BRUINS to add International flavor to roster in 2002/2003?

Ortal Oren, a 17 year-old player out of Israel, is rumored to have chosen to attend UCLA for the year 2002/'2003. The scoop on her is that she is the top junior player in her country, is not a pure shooter but can shoot the three and is a great ball handler and penetrator.

ISRAELI player makes official visit to UCLA_10.1.01

Ortal Oren, one of the top junior players in Israel, made her official visit to UCLA's campus Sept. 26. The visit appears to have gone very well. Taken that she has family who live in Orange County, things look very good for the Bruins regarding her.

Oren, from Holon, Israel, is a point guard and according to sources close to her, she will most likely play that position and will compete for a spot in the regular rotation her freshman year. She can really handle the ball, is smart, is a really nice person and is very modest and strong for her age. She is also the daughter of a coach.

UCLA receives third commitment from 2002 class_10.7.01

Ortal Oren, one of the top junior players in Israel, gave an oral commitment to the Bruins this past week, a source close to her has said. She had visited the Westwood campus, Sept. 26.

Oren, from Holon, Israel, is a point guard and according to a source who has watched her play, she will most likely play that position and will compete for a spot in the regular rotation her freshman year. She can really handle the ball, is smart, is a really nice person and is very modest and strong for her age. She is also the daughter of a coach.

Her commitment is the third for the Bruins for the 2002 class. Earlier this month, Lisa Willis, a 5-9 guard from defending National Champion Narbonne High School of Harbor City, Calif., commited to the Bruins and coach Kathy Olivier. Also, Emma Tautolo, a 6-2 forward out of Moreno Valley High School in Moreno Valley, Calif., had already given a commitment in the Fall of 2000. Willis is a top 30 player, while Tautolo is one of the top post players in the California.

The Bruins are also still in the hunt for a few other top high school players. High on UCLA's list are 5-6 guard Nikki Blue of West Bakersfield High School and 6-2 power forward Wilnett Crockett, a high school teammate of Willis, amongst some other talented players. Blue has narrowed her list of schools to UCLA and UConn, while Crockett has four other schools on her list.

BLUE wants to help take BRUINS to next level_10.25.01

The 5-7 Blue-chip guard from Bakersfield, Calif. told the Bakersfield Californian that she wants to take a chance in Westwood and that she, along with the "six" (four official) players who verballed UCLA are talented enough to help rebuild the program there.

NIKKI BLUE: "I made this choice to stay close to home so UCLA can be No. 1 instead of UConn again and again"_10.22.01

The nation's No. 1 point guard prospect explained to the Orange County Register why she chose UCLA over perennial power UConn. The 5-7 Blue averaged 34 points and eight assists per game last season for West Bakersfield High School in Bakersfield, CA.
