PLAYGROUND phenom drawing interest from UCLA

1.25.02

From the L.A. Daily News' Prep Sports' Basketball Beat
By Rich Hammond and Vincent Bonsignore/L.A. Daily News

Keith Higgins didn't know he was looking at the future of Reseda girls' basketball when he watched a pickup basketball game at the school's playground.

"I was walking around, looking for help, and I found her," said Higgins, Reseda's first-year coach, referring to sophomore Clarissa Ricks, one of the region's top newcomers.

Ricks is averaging approximately 17 points and 17 rebounds per game for the Regents, who improved to 10-5 with Wednesday's victory over San Fernando and might be headed to the upper-division City Section playoffs.

This is Ricks' first season of organized basketball, but at 6-foot she is versatile enough to play well in the post and on the perimeter even though she remains a raw talent, according to Higgins.

"We try to work on something new every week in practice," said Higgins, who played at Cal State Northridge. "We don't want to throw too much at her at once, but she's very coachable and she's a quick learner."

Higgins said Ricks already has received a recruiting letter from UCLA, and she already has succeeded in turning around a team that went 6-12 last season.
