From the Bakersfield Californian reports

The honors keep pouring in for West High senior Nikki Blue, and today's announcement might be the most prestigious.

Blue will be present when she is named to the McDonald's All-America Girls Basketball Team in a news conference today at 3 p.m., at the McDonald's restaurant at 4600 Ming Ave., near West High. Blue will also participate in the first-ever McDonald's All-America girls high school basketball game April 4 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. ESPN2 will air the inaugural girls game April 8 at 11 a.m.

Blue, who will play basketball at UCLA next season, is the Central Section's all-time and single-season scoring record holder.

Bruin fans will get two chances to preview her game on national television, since Blue was also selected to play in the 2002 Phoenix/WBCA High School All-America team. That game will be Saturday, April 6, at the Hartford Civic Center in Connecticut, and be televised nationally on ESPN2.

The Saxons will visit Bellflower Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

IN A DIVISION I-AA

EMMA TAUTOLO scored a game-high 26 points, but her effort wasn't enough, as Moreno Valley dropped the first-round game to Schurr, 62-58.

Moreno Valley finished its season at 17-11.

PITTS' 15 points, 11 boards send North into 2nd round

2.15.02

The North Torrance girls basketball team wasted little time making its intentions known in the CIF Southern Section Division II-A playoffs. The Saxons, the No. 4 seed, crushed San Marcos, 64-45, in a first-round game on Thursday at North.

North (21-6) opened the game on a 10-0 run, using its full-court press to jump on San Marcos (11-16). Traci Elliott led North with 18 points. JULIA PITTS had 15 points and 11 rebounds. Jessica Juarez had nine points and 10 rebounds off the bench.

“I don't think they were prepared for the pressure and trapping we did in the opening minutes,” North coach Krissy Duperron said. “That set them back for the rest of the game.”

North will play El Modena on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at a site to be determined.

BLUE'S play helps give coach 300th win

2.14.02

Even though UCLA-bound Nikki Blue is still the focus of the team, West Bakersfield cannot be looked at as simply Blue's team anymore — at least when the Vikings are playing well and that was exactly the case Tuesday night when they upset Stockdale (No. 1 in Central Section), 59-51, in the Mustangs gym last night.

It was West coach Pat Shiloh's 300th career win.

Blue scored 23 points -- fewer than her Central Section-leading scoring average of 29.5 -- but what she did was get the rest of the offense involved. Sophomore Shalanda Richard benefitted from Blue's seven assists to score a career-high 18 points, including 10 of West's 18 in the third quarter.

FUTURE Bruins hope to go out with a bang as playoffs begin

2.13.02

The girl’s Southern and Los Angeles City Section playoffs are about to begin, which means that three of the Bruins’ signees for next season will be playing in first-round games with their respective teams beginning Thursday.

LISA WILLIS, a 5-9 guard, and her Narbonne High School teammates, the defending national champions who are ranked No. 11 in the Nation by Student Sports and No. 10 by USA Today, are the top seed in the L.A. City playoffs. The Gauchos (21-3) will take on No. 16 Hamilton (13-11) at 5:30 p.m., Friday.

In the Southern Section Division II-A playoffs, JULIA PITTS and her North Torrance team are the No. 4 seed behind No. 1 Brea Olinda (19-6), No. 2 Santa Margarita (21-4) and Bay League rival No. 3 Redondo Union (18-7).

The Saxons (20-6) will take on San Marcos (11-15) at North Torrance, Thursday.

In the Southern Section Division I-AA, EMMA TAUTOLO and Moreno Valley (17-10) will have the toughest time winning a championship. In order to do so, they must get by not only the nation’s No. 1 team in top-seeded Lynwood (24-0), but also the nation’s No. 12 team in Long Beach Poly (28-0). The Knights are ranked No. 1 by both USA Today and Student Sports polls, while the Jackrabbits are ranked No. 12 by Student Sports and not ranked in the USA Today poll.

Moreno Valley plays host to Shurr (11-14), Saturday.

TAUTOLO's 21 helps beat 1st-place foe; Blue's coach says UCLA can wait

2.8.02

UCLA-bound EMMA TAUTOLO scored 21 points and teammate Sarah Hinck scored 22 points, including four three-pointers, as Moreno Valley (17-10, 7-3) handed Canyon Springs (21-5, 9-1) its first league loss, 68-63, Thursday. Hinck's four three-pointers gave her 50 on the season.

NIKKI BLUE scored 27 points (two points shy of her average), but made just 1-of-14 three-pointers and West Bakersfield lost for the third time in a row, 82-53, this time to Centennial in a Southwest Yosemite League game Thursday. The loss prompted West coach Pat Shiloh, still one-game shy of her 300th career win, to send a message to Blue, who hasn't played up to par in those three losses:

"I think she's getting there, we've talked about it," Shiloh said. "She needs to live for the moment. My message to her is UCLA can wait. She's anxious to go there, but they can wait."

But, can the Bruins wait?

BLUE to play in prep All-America game to be televised on ESPN2

2.6.02

2.6.02

Center EMMA TAUTOLO scored 15 of her 25 points in the first quarter to help boost Moreno Valley to a 19-8 first-quarter lead in the 61-51 Ivy League victory over host Riverside Arlington. Moreno Valley improved its record to 15-10 overall and 5-3 in league.

BLUE, TAUTOLO both score 25, not enough in losses

2.4.02

EMMA TAUTOLO scored a game-high 25 points for Moreno Valley, but that wasn't enough as her team dropped a 57-50 loss to North (Riverside) in an Ivy League game. MV fell to 15-10, 5-3, while North improved to 14-10, 5-3.

--------

Even though NIKKI BLUE finished with game-highs in points (25) and rebounds (17), she did not shoot well as West Bakersfield denied coach Pat Shiloh her 300th career-victory in a 69-55 loss to North Bakersfield at North.

West (20-4, 3-2 SWYL) had won 17 in a row to get Shiloh to 299 career wins, but has lost two consecutive games in its attempt to get its coach No. 300. But just like she did after the Vikings' 64-41 loss against Stockdale Tuesday, Shiloh made it clear that the 300 wins didn't matter.

“She's the quickest post player I've ever guarded, and I just wanted to beat her to her spot and make her work around me. And she is also a great rebounder, and we wanted to not give her a lot of putbacks. We wanted to stop her before she hurt us too much,” Grice said.

BLUE breaks central section scoring record_12.13.01

December 13, 2001_The Bakersfield Californian

The Central Section career scoring record has been broken. More than two decades ago, San Joaquin Memorial's Jackie White scored 2,375 points during her four-year career, but with 57 points in two games Wednesday night at the Monache Christmas Classic in Porterville, West High's Nikki Blue broke that record and became the Central Section's all-time career scoring leader with 2,376 points scored. And Blue showed exactly why she owns the section career scoring record Wednesday.

By the end of the week, Blue should break the all-time Central Section career scoring record, currently held by Jackie White of San Joaquin Memorial. White scored 2,375 points in her career from 1977-80, and Blue has 2,319 after scoring 30 points in an 87-40 win Tuesday over East, leaving her just 56 points from tying the all-time mark.

Blue scored 480 points as a freshman, then 640 as a sophomore and a Central Section single-season record 913 as a junior. With a minimum of four games at the Monache Christmas Classic Girls Basketball Tournament, it means that Blue needs to average as few as 14 points a game this week to wrap up the career scoring record by the end of the week.
